Ways of Using Solar Energy

Solar energy - energy that is received from the sun and converted into heat or electricity. This - the universal energy source that can be used in many ways. Three main ways of using solar energy: 1. Solar cell - converts sunlight directly into electrical energy. In a sunny climate with a one square meter of solar panel you can get enough energy for ignition of a lamp. The solar panels were originally developed to power satellites.

Power Piston Sizing

How big should your Stirling engine power piston be? A common problem Stirling engine designers face is how much volume should the power piston sweep in comparison with the displacer? This of course only applies to a Beta or Gamma engine; an alpha engine designer faces a related problem of what phase angle to use [...]

New York Times, NPR, and EDN Debate Space-Based Solar Power

One of our heroes, O Glenn Smith, has picked up the torch for space-based solar power and is doing all he can to get the word out and to stimulate research and development. He hit two very major news outlets in the same week! On 23 July 2008, he published an op-ed piece titled “Harvest [...]

Pure Power featured in GE ecomagination story

“… California?s Pure Power Distribution has created mobile solar arrays whose ability to generate reliable power has been demonstrated on, of all things, movie base camps. Their usability, however, extends far beyond the silver screen. In addition to its Mobile Solar Power System, a purely solar array, it has developed a Solar Hybrid, an 18 [...]

Engine 3F Efficiency Analysis part 2

Continuing with the analysis of where the input power (heat) to the engine goes, the next item to consider is the conduction loss often referred to as thermal shorting. Conduction losses A Stirling engine of gamma configuration, such as the one being considered, uses a displacer to shuttle the operating gas back and forth between [...]
